With a wide grin on her face Andreana put colourful strokes of paint on her canvas. She’d never thought so, but painting actually was fun. After yesterday evening she awoke this morning with a whim to paint something that would mirror her current good mood, so she quickly bought everything she needed with her saved money and just started.
After finishing the painting, and seeing it turned out really beautiful, Andreana rewarded herself with just sitting down for a while and reading one of the books she bought one of the first days since she’s arrived in Newcrest. It was a romance – she’d never read one before. It wasn’t her taste at all, well, until now.
Seems like my new life is bringing out a new me, Andreana thought and smiled to herself. She didn’t have anything against change, as long as she was able to control it.
After a while she noticed some people gathering by the pond next to her lot. She put the book away and walked over to them, hoping to make some more friends.
“Hi”, Andreana said as she reached the two women. “I just noticed you fishing over here and I thought-”
“Nobody gives a plum about what you think!”, one of the women suddenly lashed out at her. “You think you’re all that special, living in plain sight for everyone with that stupid contract you signed! If you want that much attention, go back to where you came from and just take part in a reality tv show! You think you can build up this town from scratch? Well, then you’re pretty naive! Nobody wants you here!”
Andreana was completely taken aback. Her mind was completely empty, trying to sort what this woman just said to her. Seeing her speechless, a content look crossed the woman’s face and both of them turned around and left.
A man walking by couldn’t help but overhear the yelling. He called Andreana over.
“I apologize in the name of these two”, he said. “They don’t mean it. It’s just that it’s been really long since someone new moved here, and now you’re here, determined to build up Newcrest. It’s just a lot for them to handle at once.”
“I don’t really get it”, Andreana said, still taken aback. “Isn’t it what everyone living her wants? That the town will be lively and flourishing again?”
“Oh, some do, some don’t. Don’t focus on the people who don’t. You’ll do better without them!” The man started laughing. Obviously Andreana didn’t get the joke.
Only now she noticed Akira has walked up to them.
“Err, Andreana? I need to speak to you. Alone.”
The other man laughed again. “Oh, no problem. I need to go anyway. See you around!” With that he turned around and went away.
“Phew, thank god I was around to save you!” Akira let out a relieved breath.
“Save me?” Andreana was irritated, the second time in less than an hour. “From him?”
“Well, yes”, Akira said. “You see, this guy – he’s called Victor Feng in case he didn’t tell you, and I bet he didn’t – he’s quite shady. He claims to be a politician, but nobody really knows what he’s actually doing. Some of the people he’s had to do with suddenly had to leave their home town and were never seen again. So, just be careful. Don’t tell him too much, okay? Wouldn’t want you to be one of his victims.”
Andreana smiled and hugged Akira, following an impulse.
“Don’t worry, I won’t”, she promised. At least one of the people here seemed to care about her, and it made her really happy. She considered Akira her best friend. They waved goodbye and he left.
A strange feeling came over her as she watched him walking away.
“Oh no”, Andreana said to herself. Could she be in love already?
Later that day, Andreana made her daily round collecting everything she found in her environment to make some more money. As she made a quick pause to take a look at her phone, she noticed someone walking up behind her.
“Hey, Andreana!”
Her heart started beating fast. She’d recognise this voice everywhere.
When Akira stood before her, Andreana spoke without thinking.
“Hey, sweetie, want to meet up with me tonight?”
Seeing that look of horror on Akira’s face, realisation dawned on her. She buried her face in her hands. “Oh my god.”
Finally Akira spoke. “I’m sorry, if I made that impression to you, but I… I need to go.”
Andreana didn’t look up until she couldn’t hear his footsteps anymore. What was she thinking? Clearly nothing. Of course he wouldn’t feel the same way, he barely knew her.
Quickly Andreana ran home and put out the watering can to tend to her plants.
“At least I’ve got you, you won’t let me down”, she whispered.
